Day 9 - July 9, 2003

Cozumel

Since we were all exhausted from staying up late to watch the movie, I let everyone sleep until 10:00.  We just made it to Topsiders in time for breakfast.  We were out of the room and off the hsip by noon and grabbed a cab to Mr. Sancho's.  The thing I like about the dock in Cozumel, is that you have to go up an escalator and up over the highway to get to the taxi stand, walking through a mini-mall.  You can't go anywhere without be faced with shopping opportunities!  The pier itself is pretty long and I saw guys on what I guess are the Mexican version of rickshaws offering people rides.  I assume they only go the length of the pier.  I don't know for sure and I don't know how much they charge.

The cab cost us $18 for five of us to get to Mr. Sancho's.  It took us all of 15 minutes to get there. It is a beautiful, free beach with crystal clear water.  You walk in the entrance past some small shops, past the bar to get to the beach.  The bar stools are swings.  The beach was not crowded there are tables with umbrellas to sit at. We grabbed a table near the entrance and made ourselves comfortable.  The beach itself is a very gentle slope into the water.  The waiter brought us a menu and we ordered two orders of cheese Manchego Cheese Quesadillas,  two strawberry Marguertas for Seth and me and two cantaloupe smoothies for the girls.  We spent the afternoon swimming and chatting with some people at the neighboring tables, who were on the Carnival and Celebrity.  We compared experiences and made them jealous when we mentioned that we saw Pirates the night before.  The couple who were on the Celebrity said that they were still showing My Big Fat Greek Wedding on their ship!  We stayed until 4:00 when we had to get back to the ship so Elana could meet up with the Fury Catamaran Teen Cruise.

One warning about Mr. Sancho's. This could be an isolated incident, but make sure you check your bill before paying.  The waiter showed us what we ordered and gave us the final amount in pesos, which is how the prices are listed in the menu.  It wasn't until the next day, when I ran into Jim, who we first met on our Captain Marvin's trip, that he mentioned he had trouble with being overcharged on his bill.  I tried to remember what we ordered and think that we may have been overcharged as well.

We got back to the ship and Seth went off to meet his friends for the 5:00 showing of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black PearlElana went off to the excursion meeting.  Judy, Sara and I were on our own for dinner.  Tonight was Mexicalifragiliexpialidocious.  We dressed up inour best tropical wear and headed down to dinner.  The ships photographer came around and we asked Jessie and Amy and the boys to join us so that we could take a group photo.

After dinner, we went to Rockin' Bar D for So You Think You Know Your TV Songs.  We were terrible.  All the theme song clips they played were from the 80s and 90s, and we only knew half of them.

We then went up to deck 9 for the Sailaway Deck Party, but I quickly went down to deck 4 to do a little reading.  I went back down to Rockin' Bar D for the adult karaoke.  Sara sang Bette Midler's The Rose and Seth, prompted by his two friends, got up to sing Neal Diamond's Sweet Caroline.  I was going to give it a go, but the monitor was at the other end of the floor and I was afraid I'd have to much trouble seeing the words.  Hey, anything for an excuse.
