Saturday, July 3, 1999 - Day 8

(Out Saga slowly winds down as the Canetti Family enjoys there last day in the world.)

We went swimming at the main pool in the morning. We set up on some lounges near the lockers. It’s lucky we did, since the skies opened up just about when we were getting ready to leave. Judy and Elana had used the facilities to shower and I was reading. I grabbed what I could and ducked under the covering at the Muddy Rivers Pool Bar. Did I say the skies opened up? I mean this was a real downpour. Elana kept running back and forth, gathering things up, unfortunately not in time to save some things from getting soaked. Including our towels which we took from the room when we read the sign that said towels weren’t provided at the pool. I think they need to be more specific like OKW and specify the quiet pool.

After going back to the room and changing, we dove to Animal Kingdom, since I was determined to see Tarzan Rocks! I rented an ECV again today, after realizing yesterday that hobbling around the world on a crutch just doesn’t cut it. We got on line as they were just about filling up and just missed the 2:30 show. The good news was that we were first in line for the 3:45 show. I happily sat in line and chatted with the CM while Judy and the kids went to get ice cream. Shortly after the 2:30 show started, the CM moved the line all the way to the front, right outside the theater, so we were able to listen to the show and build up anticipation. When it was our turn, the wheelchair guests were let in first, then the rest of the guests. The show itself was good. Tarzan1.jpg (39763 bytes)

It’s based on the latest movie, with a rock band performing the songs, two singers, dancers, acrobats, Tarzan look-alikes on rollerblades, Tarzan, Jane and Kala (who leads the audience in a rendition of the Shooby Doop song ) Like the Lion King show, there are acrobats, who use vines instead of rings and bars. There is a platform in the middle of the stage with a ramp on each one of the four sides, that the rollerbladers ride up and down and then come on a track through the audience. The set is dark, made to look like a jungle, and the colors are all dark greens and blues. While we enjoyed the show, we still felt Lion King was the king of the Disney jungle.

Elana wanted to ride Kali again, so we checked out the line and finding it shorter than the last time we rode it, got on line. By now, I got driving the ECV down to a science and maneuvered around the turns in the queue much better. Since we had dinner plans at 6:30, we needed to stay dry, so we covered up with our ponchos.

We left Animal Kingdom at 5:30 and drove over to MGM. Our priority seating was at the Brown Derby, a restaurant we never tried before. It is one of the more expensive restaurants but well worth it. I had the Braised Lamb Shank with oven roasted orzo pasta and port win glaze. Judy and Seth had the seared salmon fillet with Saffron risotto, asparagus and crispy leeks. The girls had the kids macaroni and cheese, supplemented by the cheese fries. Judy said her salmon was the bet she had all week. By the way, the American Express restaurant guide rates the Brown Derby with two dollar signs. We felt it really should be three.

While Judy and Elana finished up, Seth, Sara and I left them to take another ride on the Rock n’ Roller Coaster. While on line, we had a nice conversation with a CM that works in Animal Kingdom and his girlfriend, who had ridden the coaster a number of times that week. It was from him that I learned about some of the details about the coaster. Plus, one of the t-shirts sold in the gift shop has all the stats on the back. We were talking about Disney trivia and he told me something I’ve never heard before, that the castle in Magic Kingdom here is reversed from the one in Disneyland, because when they were designing it, Walt picked up the model of the castle and turned it around, saying he didn’t like it the way it was built in Disneyland. Anyone ever hear that one before? He is also the one who told me that the place to be for the Millennium celebration will be EPCOT.

After another exhilarating ride. We met Judy and Elana at the entrance to Fantasmic. We enjoyed it so much we wanted to see it again. This time we sat to the right, in the Ursula section. After the show, Judy and the girls went to check out the photo we had taken on Hollywood Boulevard, while Seth and I got shakes from the Dockside Diner. Then we went back to the room.
